Jeep Compass Review by Expert
Jeep Compass is the sleekest and smallest vehicle in the Jeep lineup. This vehicle fills up the gap between the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Patriot. The car is a hybrid mix of an SUV and a city car. This smaller Jeep is the first one to be sold without an all wheel drive. The engine will be sourced by Mercedes and two thirds of the Jeep Compass models will have this engine. But one should not expect the level of refinement as in Mercedes. Like all other models this one also gets a facelift and sleeker looks. Endurance and reliability are good but the ride quality maybe an issue in the new model.
Fiat plans to launch four variants of Jeep Compass in India- Sport 4dr Front-wheel Drive, Latitude 4dr Front-wheel Drive, Limited 4dr Front-wheel Drive and Sport 4dr 4x4. The last one is a four wheel drive car all others are two wheel drives. Jeep will be offering front wheel drives for its cars. All of them will be equipped with 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4L engines. Among these the latitude and the limited versions seem to have best tuned engines with maximum towing capacity.
Engine range is vast with both petrol and diesel motors in the lineup. Petrol motors are offered on 2.2 and 2.4L variants. Both of these are equipped with active four wheel drive system. Electronic clutch transfers the power from front to rear. The 2.0L is available in front wheel drive version. The 1998 cc petrol engine produces a maximum power of 154 bhp at the rate of 6300 rpm and a peak torque of 190 Nm of torque at the rate of 3600 rpm. The 2.2L has better stats with 134 bhp of maximum power at the rate of 5100 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at the rate of 1400 rpm. The 2.4L engine is a heavy duty one. This 2360 cc engine produces a 168 bhp of maximum power at the rate of 6000 rpm and 220 Nm of peak torque at the rate of 4500 rpm.
The car makes resemblance with the Grand Cherokee especially when it comes to flared wheel arches, headlamps and the waistline. Compass has classic jeep look with seven – slot grille that too with chrome surround. Prominent and attractive bodylines, the chrome rubbing strips give it sleek and impressive profile. Leather interior at the inside with chrome rims around the instruments, LED illuminated cup holders and air vents add bits to the interior. Interiors is filled with ample of space ensuring good legroom, hip and shoulder space along with 436 litres of storage space, which by folding can be extended to 1227 litres.
Jeep Compass safety features include speed sensitive power locks and engine immobilizer. Electronic stability control and brake assist makes it a safer ride. Anti-lock 4 wheel disc brakes provide it with immense braking power. Sentry key theft deterrent system secures the vehicle.
