New Toyota Camry launched at Rs 23.80 lakh in Delhi

24 August, 2012: Today, the aged looking Toyota Camry is launched with a facelift in India at an aggressive introductory price of INR 23.80 Lakh (ex showroom, Delhi). The slashed prices have been possible due to loads of localization taking place in the manufacturing of the premium saloon, whereas earlier it was imported as a CBU. With this cut-throat pricing rivals like Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata will definitely feel the assault. This New Toyota Camry model has got sharp styling cues with more imposing yet elegant illustration. 

Some of the most significant features include rain sensing wipers, 8 way adjustable driver seat, 10-spoke 16” alloys, Smart-stop micro hybrid system and High Intensity headlamps with automatic leveling & washers together with Multimedia Infotainment system. Available only in 2.5L petrol engine that is coupled with 6-speed AT, it outpours 179bhp and 233Nm.

Toyota Camry is rated as one of the most polished sedans from Toyota Motors. The elite sedan is into production since 1982 and during this period it has got many improvements and upgrades across the globe. The existing Camry in India is the ‘XV40’model that started its sales in 2007. At the 2012 Delhi Expo the company unveiled a face-lifted New Toyota Camry that will soon be a part of Japanese operations in India replacing the present one.

The New Toyota Camry will assist the company to re-collect its lost pride in the D-segment. It will be fighting for space with the likes of Skoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat and Nissan Tiena. The Toyota ‘beyond excellence’ sedan is expected to fall in the range of INR 22 Lakh to INR 24 Lakh (Ex showroom, Delhi).

The new Toyota Camry XV50 model that is currently available in United States comes with a new face and a major uplift is given to the interiors of the sedan. The front has got new pair of projector beam halogen headlamps, while the spectacular appearing front grille looks more premium with more chrome inserts, while the earlier was also not bad either. There are newly crafted wider-looking front bumpers that have clearer fog lamps engraved. The fascia appears a bit similar to the ongoing Honda Accord and Honda Civic. While there are some highlighted cues on the bonnet and on the sides of the exquisite sedan.

The dashboard looks magnificent and has features like large optitron multi display along with modern 6 CD changer audio/music system that has aux-in and USB feature and a dual zone climate control air-conditioner. The leather wrapped tilt-telescopic adjustable steering wheel has most of the controls mounted on it like cruise control, AC control and audio control. The safety aspects include 6-airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist along with vehicle stability control aspect. The other advanced security features include head impact protection along with an innovative WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) element that results in fewer injuries at the time of any mishap.  

The 2012 Camry holds new 2.5L, 4-cylinder, DOHC 16Valve dual VVT-I petrol power train that is capable to yield a maximum output of nearly 178 PS at 6000 rpm besides utmost torque of around 230 Nm at 4100 rpm. The latest engine developed on an advanced fuel efficient technology is mated to a 6-speed Manual Transmission (MT), while a 6-speed Automatic Transmission (AT) is also expected to be made available after its launch in the country.

 

Toyota Camry Mileage and fuel efficiency

The Toyota Camry premium sedan carries an advanced 2.4L, 4-cylinder, DOHC petrol engine at its heart that comes incorporated with a highly fuel efficient VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing – Intelligence) technology that delivers a considerably high fuel economy in both manual and automatic transmission versions. The VVT-I technology not only decrease the fuel consumption of the engine of the car but also ensures a superior performance of the engine. While the manual transmission version of the car delivers a mileage of 9.0 Km per liter (on city roads) and 11.9 Km per liter (on highway), the automatic transmission version is slightly lesser fuel efficient at 7.8 Km per liter (on city roads) and 10.8 Km per liter (on highway). The mileage of the car is comparatively higher in its segment against the likes of Honda Accord and Nissan Teana.


Meanwhile, the company is all set to launch a new version of the Camry which is expected to be offered with a 2550 cc petrol engine and a highly advanced six speed petrol engine.

 

Toyota Camry Models and Features

The Toyota Camry is currently available in four variants in the Indian market, details of which are given below: -
 

Variants Features
Toyota Camry MT This is the base version of the Camry sedan that is powered by a 2.4 litre of DOHC petrol engine and come incorporated with a five speed manual transmission. The major attractions of the car include Dual Zone Automatic AC incorporated with Plasmacluster & Minus Generator, 6-CD in-dash with Psychoacoustics and MP3, WMA compatible with Aux-in, 8-way power drive seat with lumbar support with 4-way power front passenger seat, Audio Rain Sensing Wipers, steering mounted controls for Audio, AC and MID. The car is blessed with a range of new age safety features including Antilock Braking System- ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution- EBD and Brake Assist.
Toyota Camry MT with Moon-Roof It features the same stuff as available in the base version except the addition of a moon-roof.
Toyota Camry AT This is the base automatic transmission version of the Camry sedan that comes powered by a 2.4 litre of DOHC petrol engine along with a sophisticated five speed automatic transmission (which is an Electronically Controlled Transmission). It is expected that the new 2012 Toyota Camry will be powered by a 2550 cc petrol engine with a six speed automatic transmission. Besides having all the features available in the base Camry model, the Camry AT also carries some additional features including Cruise Control, Rear AC vents, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).
Toyota Camry AT with Moon-Roof This is the top end variant of the Toyota Camry that is featured with a fascinating a moon-roof besides having all the features of Camry AT.


 

Toyota Camry Engine, power and performance

As mentioned above, the Toyota Camry carries a 2.4 litre of DOHC petrol engine at is available in both manual and automatic transmission versions. While the automatic transmission version of the car comes incorporated with an electronically controlled five speed automatic transmission, the manual version is carries a five speed manual gearbox. The 2.4 litre of DOHC petrol engine of the car delivers a peak power of 167 PS of peak power at 6000 rpm and 22.8 kgm of top torque at 4000 rpm. The car takes just 7.8 seconds to break the speed barrier of 100 km per hour.


However, the upcoming 2012 Toyota Camry will come powered by a more powerful 2500 cc DOHC VVT-i petrol engine that will be delivering a peak output of 178.5 bhp at 6000 rpm along with a top torque of 23.55 kgm at 4100 rpm. Moreover, the existing five speed and automatic transmission versions will be replaced by new six speed manual and automatic transmissions.
