The car made its way into the Sao Paolo International Motor Show in October last year and is likely to be available here in India soon. The SUV will not feature FWD option and will likely come with Front Wheel Drive only however the SU will feature an Electronic Stability Program.
As most of you are aware, the Indian unit of Germany based leading car maker Volkswagen is on an expansion drive in the Indian auto market. The SUV is currently available in same three variants. Below are the Tiguan’s expected features and their expected variants. Initially the Tiguan model is expected to be launched in a 2.0L diesel version only.
Volkswagen Tiguan S:- The Tiguan S is expected to be the base variant which will possibly come powered by a range of new age features 8-speaker sound system with MP3- and WMA-compatible in-dash CD player, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth hands-free calling system, multiple airbags, etc. An optional power sliding panoramic sunroof system is also expected to be offered with this variant.
Volkswagen Tiguan SE: - The Tiguan SE would be the mid range variant which is expected to be a range of additional features including 18" New York alloy wheels, Touch screen Premium VIII sound system, Power sliding panoramic sunroof (12.7 sq. ft.) and a new age navigation system.
Volkswagen Tiguan SEL: - This will be the top end variant which will be blessed with a range of premium features besides the features of SE variants. Besides the 6-speed manual transmission, the higher variants are expected to be joined with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, Sport mode, and Dynamic Shift Program (DSP).
Volkswagen Tiguan Engine, Power and Performance
As mentioned above, the Volkswagen Tiguan is expected to be launched in both petrol and diesel variants in the Indian market.
Initially, the company will launch a diesel version of the SUV, which is expected to come powered by a 2.0L TSI, 16-valve, DOHC, in-line 4-cylinder turbocharged engine with intercooler. The powerful diesel engine of the Tiguan will be capable of delivering a peak power of 170 bhp along with a peak torque of 356 Nm. All variants of Volkswagen Tiguan Diesel will be carrying the same engine and will deliver the same power and torque figures.
Later on, the company is likely to launch a petrol version of the car which will possibly be carrying a 1.4 L, 1400 CC, four-cylinder engine, which is expected to be delivering a peak power of 170 bhp along with a peak torque of 285 Nm. A six speed manual transmission will be standard among all Tiguan Petrol variants along with an optional 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, Sport mode, and Dynamic Shift Program (DSP).

The Tiguan will not be the first ever SUV from Volkswagen in India, as it already sells high luxury SUV – Volkswagen Touareg – in the company. However, unlike Touareg, the Tiguan is not expected to be imported to Indian as a completely built unit (CBU). Instead, the company will bring the Tiguan through CKD (completely knocked-down unit) route in the Indian auto market, making it easier for the company to price the vehicle competitively.
The Major competitors of the Tiguan model in the Indian auto market will include Toyota Fortuner, Renault Koleos, Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Captiva, Nissan X-Trail, Mitsubishi Outlander, Skoda Yeti and BMW X1. Moreover, the Upcoming Mahindra XUV 500 will also be a major competitor to this model.
