Car for handicapped developed by a physically challenged person
What would an individual do after going through a fatal accident and following life leaves you tottering on a wheel chair? One will be totally dismayed and feel devastated with rest of his life. But that’s not the case with the 38 year old Biju Verghese’s life which had met with a horrifying accident, soon after which he found that he will never be able to walk and will have to spend his remaining life on a wheel chair.
Biju Verghese; a resident of Erumeli town in Kerela and an electrician by profession, had to quit his job in 1998 due to this unavoidable happening. But some people are born tough just like Biju Verghese who went on to work hard at his workshop to develop an age-old fitment kit for his car that would grant him the much needed ability to move. As per Biju the thought came to his mind while he was watching a series on television based on the Air Force planes, which showcased how huge fighter planes are controlled using the some small levers. After a number of fruitless efforts the kit was created.
Automotive Research Association in India (ARAI) acknowledged hand-controlled mechanism in the year 2007. After which Biju was the first person in the country to receive the license for the alteration of cars. The 38 year old’s proud moment came in when he received the award of ‘Best Inventor of India’ from then nation’s President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Till now Biju has given his Midas touch to as many as 200 cars and people’s life has taken a new turn with it.
Biju is overwhelmed and satisfied with the response he collects from the disabled individuals whose lives are now changed by him. In order to make available all the lawful benefits to the handicapped, he now wants the state government to make necessary amendments in the Vehicle Act and identify physically handicapped persons.
