Mahindra Reva NXR assesses feasibility in Australia, launch in India this Diwali

Mahindra’s electric car Reva seems to have the traits of being a world car. It had lacked consumer response in India during its debut perhaps due to the mind set of people as well as lack of necessary infrastructure for electric cars in the country. The Mahindra EV is expected to reenter the market in India with Mahindra Reva NXR this Diwali. Significantly, Mahindra is thinking of pitching in an assembly plant in Australia. The new generation Reva which is the Reva NXR will also be produced there besides India and will cater to domestic market in Australia.

Currently, Reva is produced at the Bangalore facility and there is a second unit coming up soon. Slated to be launched this year during Diwali, the Reva NXR will be entering its second generation with improved run per charge as well as higher top speed. Reva is the only electric car in India in its segment and there is presently no rival to it. However, the EV segment in India is quite dormant contrary to the high demand of EVs in China and other countries. In India, Tata Nano EV is a far possibility while Nissan Leaf unveiled at the Auto Expo is still awaited. There are though small hybrid variants of cars available in India.

Feasibility surveys in this regard are underway and Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles Company is said to have been in constant communication with the Victoria Government there. The basic things in consideration for the survey are research, production and supply chain analysis and prospects of clean vehicles like Reva there. The study is said to take six months and based the survey and feasibility report, a decision in this respect will be taken within this year. As part of assessing demand, the company will be exporting the Mahindra Reva NXR to Australia from India.
