Mahindra to launch Rs 3 lakh small car in India by 2013-14

After trying its hand in a varying degree of automotive segments, country’s largest utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra is all set to mark its debut in the volume driven small car segment by financial year 2013-14. The new Mahindra small car will be taking on with the best selling small car Maruti Alto that is currently accounting for monthly sales of over 30,000 units.

As the Mahindra’s small car project is still in its initial stage, is it expected to be ready for commercial production in next two years. The small car will be manufactured at Mahindra & Mahindra’s Tamil Nadu facility. The car is speculated to be carrying considerably high fuel economy and lower carbon emission as compared to existing cars of this segment.

Expected to be launched in the price segment of sub Rs 3 lakh, the new Mahindra small car could prove a real threat to the segment leader Alto that has been unchallenged in its segment, so far. Besides Alto, the other major competitors of this prospective car will include Hyundai’s upcoming 800 cc small car and an upcoming small car from the GM India, and Fiat’s upcoming small car.

Mahindra & Mahindra is currently the most diversified auto makers in the country with having its operations in Sports utility Vehicles, commercial vehicles, Tractors, Two-wheelers, electric cars and passenger cars. With marking entry in the small car segment, Mahindra would be registering a considerable boost in its markets share in the passenger car segment.

Some of the popular hatchback models in the Indian auto market are Chevrolet Beat Diesel, Toyota Etios Liva, Ford Figo, Maruti Swift, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat and Volkswagen Polo. Apart from these popular models, cars going to hit the Indian roads this year are Force One, Nissan Sunny, Maruti Cervo and Honda Brio.
