Maruti Suzuki India declared its sales report for the month of May earlier today at 98,889 units with 4.99 % fall in sales. Maruti sold 1, 04,073 units in the month of May, last year. Maruti registered sales of 89.478 units in the domestic market which is less than 93, 519 units which it sold in the same time period last year. Hence Maruti posted a dip of 4.32 units in May. Maruti witnessed a whopping growth of 63.77 per cent in the sales of Maruti Swift Dzire with 17,707 units sold in the month of May this year as compared to 10,812 units sold last year in the same month.

Exports too slumped by 10.88 percent with 9,406 units in May 2012 as compared to 10,554 units in the same time last year. The accrued passenger sales in the Indian car market dropped by 5.94 per cent at 72,309 units against 76,874 units sold in the same time period last year. The mini car segment of the company reported fall in sales by 29.03 per cent at 29,895 units in the month of May against 42, 125 units sold in the same month last year. The mini car segment of Maruti includes cars like Maruti Alto, Maruti Wagon R and Maruti 800.

On the other hand, the compact car segment that comprises of cars like Maruti Swift, Maruti Ritz and Maruti Estilo posted a jump of 14.66 per cent in the sales with 24,290 units as compared to 21,185 units in the same time period last year.

However, Maruti SX4 sales skidded by a staggering 85.01 per cent to 405 units against 2,702 units sold in May 2011. Maruti’s sole luxury sedan present in India, Maruti Kizashi sales too fell by 76 per cent at 12 units as compared to 50 units sold in May 2011. This clearly shows that Maruti Suzuki India needs to focus on the mini car segment that lacks diesel engine, also something needs to be done to lift up the fading sales of Maruti SX4, maybe the company should think of giving it a facelift along with cutting its boot a bit. Also Kizashi had been a dud seller from the beginning; this might be an indication for Maruti to assemble it locally in India to cut down its cost. Maruti sure will have something on its mind, hope the company comes up with a viable solution soon to ramp up its sales.
