Japanese carmaker Nissan contributing its part to the go green theme of the Auto Expo has displayed Nissan Leaf in New Delhi. The Leaf as the name sounds is green in it all aspects and is totally environment friendly besides being power packed. The Nissan Leaf is in an electric vehicle in its truest sense and is powered by a lithium-ion battery that can take the car to 175 kms without recharge. However, India has to wait a little longer than expected to see this car on Indian roads.

Nissan Leaf is Nissan’s effort to take the 11th Auto Expo theme ‘New Technology- Green Technology’ further. Termed to be zero emission electric cars, the Nissan Leaf is a family car that runs on the power delivered to an electric engine under the bonnet.

Nissan Leaf (acronym for Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car) will be the first hatchback in India that is electric powered. However, Tata has also unveiled Tata Indica Electric at the Auto Expo and it would be a matter of time to see which one hits the Indian roads first.  

The five-door hatchback Nissan Leaf was launched in 2010 and has a front engine with front-wheel drive. The electric motor is of 80 kW and can produce 110 hp, 280 Nm of torque. The motor is mated to a Single speed direct drive transmission. The motor is powered by 24 kWh lithium ion battery. Leaf has a top speed of 150 km/h.

Besides, in order to meet to meet the marketing needs for the new products that Nissan hopes to introduce this year in India, it will also be expanding its dealer network from 50 outlets now to 110 by next year and the company plans to cover 85 percent of the market. The total number of the Nissan outlets in India will be increased to 150 by 2015.
