Peugeot Citroen starts its India operations with INR 4,000 Crore facility in Sananad

On Thursday the 3rd November 2011, PSA Peugeot Citroen kicks off its India operations at Sanand, Gujarat after performing the stone laying ritual at the production site. The manufacturing site at Sanand is located 40 kilometers away from mega city Ahmadabad. The esteemed project site has company investment of INR 4,000 Crore.

Headquartered in Paris, the France based automobile manufacturer is expected to roll out its initial vehicle by mid of the year 2014. As per the company in the primary phase the Sanand plant; which is spread over the 600 acres of land, will produce 170,000 units that will be increased to 340,000 units by the year 2016. A part of the production unit will also be utilized in the manufacturing of petrol engines and gearboxes.

The French carmaker is heavily relying on the fast growing auto markets of Latin America, Russia, China and India. PSA Peugeot Citroen was going well in European auto sector until the sluggish phase observed by the company in the European market.

Mr. Gregoire Oliver, CEO for Asia operations stated that Peugeot’s admires to emerge as a global auto maker, but without coming to India it could have been incomplete. The company will enter with its D segment vehicle Peugeot 508; a capacious family car, after which the firm will concentrate more on B+ and C segment cars that consists nearly 80 percent of automotive sector in India.

Recruitment for the country’s operations has already commenced and many new representatives have packed their bags for training in firm’s France based manufacturing unit. The infrastructure at the Sanand unit will be equivalent to that of Europe.

In future, Peugeot will launch its hybrid vehicles in the nation. Ford Motors will provide diesel engine assistance, with BMW responsible to supply petrol engines to the company.
