Skoda Citigo could precede Volkswagen Up launch in India

Two cars – Volkswagen Up and Skoda Citigo are awaiting a green signal from their respective brands to enter India. However, the two brands seem to be still continuing their market survey for these small cars. As per the latest updates, though there is no word regarding the UP hatchback but the Citigo small car seems to be on its way to India with Skoda investing around 300 cr in expanding its production capabilities in the country. Both these small cars are highly expected in India and these will be the most hot segment of the car industry in India.

Earlier the Volkswagen group had no intentions to introduce a low priced car in India but later following customer demand and sensing a highly lucrative car segment, the German car maker agreed to bring the Volkswagen UP small car and Skoda Citigo under its subsidiary. Still Volkswagen did not disclose its cards and is only saying that it is undertaking a feasibility survey as well as undertaking measures to cut the price down. Similarly, the Japanese car maker is soon to bring in the low priced budget brand Datsun in India. Still, it seems that bringing in a Maruti 800 or Tata Nano rival in India is surely an uphill task.

The Skoda Citigo that is expected to be nearing its final yes for India will be a small car that is another small car avatar based on its parent company offering Up. In India, the Citigo will be placed under the Skoda Fabia hatchback and in the segment it will be closely giving a tough time to Maruti Alto and other hopefully Maruti Cervo. As per the details available, the made for India Citigo will have a 59 bhp entry level trim and will be offered on petrol initially. Again, if Citigo is able to launch Citigo diesel it will be more than a miracle for India as the country still awaits an entry level offering in diesel.
