Tata Motors banking on Safari and Sumo Gold for more market chunk

SUVs are sure to storm the car market in India. With Mahindra already with a fleet of SUVs in India including the Mahindra XUV 500 that already is getting impressive bookings, Tata has also decided to push its SUV sales and capture 15 percent of the SUV market in India. It would not be an uphill task for Tata Motors and it seems that there will be an addition to the Tata SUV line up in India to make it happen. Makeover of the existing Tata Sumo Grande could also be on the cards besides a pan India presence for Tata Sumo Gold. Notably, Tata has already launched the Tata Safari Storme at the 2012 Auto Expo.

Significantly, there is a rising trend for SUVs across the globe and equally in India as well demand for SUV cars has risen in the recent past. In addition to this, the average car buyer in India has grown younger and SUVs seem to be the perfect car matching the taste of younger generation. Sensing all this and more factors, Tata’s claim of extending its presence in the SUV market to over 15 percent this fiscal seem not far as the SUV maker already has a considerable hold over the market. Currently Tata has a 13 percent hold over the SUV market and a little addition of 2 percent when it has a reasonably better line up will not be a tough task for the car maker.

The numbers also seem to be possible following the increase in sale of Tata Safari and Tata Sumo Gold. As per the sales report, Tata Sumo Gold launched in October 2011 is now getting 3,300 unit sales a month. Currently the Sumo Gold is available in select markets and Tata hopes to launch it in other cities across the nation. Now that the Sumo is almost 18 years old in India and is still performing is a positive sign for the SUV maker. Ashesh Dhar, Head-Utility Vehicle Product Group, Tata Motors Ltd reportedly said that the secret behind Sum Gold’s performance is the features and the refreshed looks besides a CR4 engine which makes it performing as well as frugal.
