Tata Motors is bullish on Tata Nano and has reportedly said that the early opportunity has been wasted but still there is an immense opportunity lying in waiting in the developing countries. It is sure that the Nano has failed to get the expected response in the country - its homeland. It is true that it has been marred by early tussles in West Bengal and it is also true that Tata could never utilize the full capacity of Sanand plant in Gujarat. The magic figure of 10,000 Nano sales was reached only once and Nano sales remained between 6k to 8k units per month. In May this year, Tata sold 8507 units.

Nobody knows what went wrong with Nano. Was it the ‘common man’s car’ tag, is it its cost cutting, or is it the exterior appearance or a faulty marketing strategy? Whatever be the reason it is sure that Nano did not sell well. Still, the market is open to Nano and it still is the entry level car in India. No doubt, it has the potential to sell in huge numbers but even after severe brainstorming the question, ‘Why Nano did not sell well?’ could not be answered.

Even after this, Tata Motors will be continuing its efforts to expand the sales and service network of Nano in India and will be stepping up its export efforts. In 2011-12 over 77989 Nano were sold which is up by 10.73 percent over 2010-2011. Also, despite of efforts by almost all the car makers, the Nano rival could not arrive. There were reports of Renault Nissan Bajaj alliance coming up with ultra low cost car and now there is buzz that Maruti is coming up with Maruti Cervo but all claims are claims only and Nano rival is still on cards.
