Volkswagen to focus on three car platforms, vision 2018 intact

In order to realize its dream to be world’s number one car maker, German car brand Volkswagen is aggressively burning the midnight oil. Being a conglomerate of Volkswagen, Lamborghini, Skoda, Porsche, Seat, Audi, Bentley and Bugatti, the "people's car" maker has set goal to dominate the world by 2018. For this, it has reportedly figured out three car platforms that will shape its various brand cars. These are the MLB, MQB And MSB platforms.

The MQB platform –‘Modularer Querbaukasten’ in German, is a platform that puts the engine in a Transverse form. Basically, a platform made for superminis to large family cars, the MQB allows VW to put engine at the front with a front wheel drive assembly. This platform will be used by Audi A3 and Audi TT Sports Coupe. The MLB platform on the other hand is a platform that seats the engine longitudinally and Audi A4 and Audi A8 along with Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Phaeton will be based on this platform. Where this platform will give an ease to share components, it will also greatly reduce the input costs in producing different components for each car. The MSB Platform on the other hand eases rear wheel drive mechanism along with an option for all wheel drive as well. Volkswagen cars developed on this platform will be able to have engine placement on the front, middle or at the rear thus making it the most flexible platform.

These three platforms will be the basis for all the upcoming cars under the Volkswagen group. Another thing that is worth mentioning here is that by basing its cars on a single or a couple of platforms that are very adaptable and versatile will give advantage to VW to adapt the cars according to the regional standards and norms.
