Indian car buyers are raving about compact SUVs, Premier Rio being one of them. When Premier launched Rio in 2011, it was greatly hyped as the cheapest and first compact SUV in Indian offering all the basic features of a SUV. However, in the rat race of affordable mini SUVs like Renault Duster, Mahindra Quanto, Maruti Ertiga and Premier Rio seem to have lost its image in Indian car market. It is still a very good considerable option for fleet owners looking for a cost-effective off-terrain vehicle. The company is sought as a downmarket and old brand by car buyers and the fact that Premier has only a handful of service centres has dozed off the sales even more. The company is trying every bit to be in news so that it can loom in people’s mind. The home grown company launched new diesel variants in Aug 2012, fuelled by Fiat Multi-jet 1.3 litre diesel motor.

Premier Rio DX, the variant available before multijet engines came, is fitted with turbo diesel engine that churns out a maximum power of 64.8 Ps@4000 rpm while the torque stands at 152 Nm@2250-3000 rpm. The power delivery is less than the CRDi4 engine, Premier is offering now. The 1489 cc engine with 4 cylinders misses on an intercooler complies only with BSIII emission norms only good for Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

Interiors and quality looks below average and this is one of the major reasons people don’t like buying Premier Rio. Premier Rio DX priced less than Premier Rio LX is the base diesel variant and satisfy customers with an air conditioner, power steering, front power windows, and remote fuel lid opener. The variant features only steel wheels, misses on body coloured rear wheel cover, floor matting and CD player with FM/AM radio. Safety features in the SUV are looked after nicely. Anti-lock braking system with Electronic Brakeforce distribution and brake assist maintain body stability of the car during emergency braking while the front seat belts with 3-point ELR with pretensioners keep you in place even after a strong jerk. High mount stop lamp at the rear helps vehicle at back know from afar that you’ve applied brakes. Child proof rear door locks ensure child safety in the rear seats and keyless entry prevents thefts with unauthorized keys.
