Petrol car will make more sense, until your usage is 2000 km per month or more.
Reasons:
- With diesel settling at Rs 56 after deregulation and petrol at Rs 70, it will take you to to 3-4 years for recovery of additional investment you make on diesel car. Also, take into account the interest on the additional money.
- People tend to change car after 5-7 years. So just after an year or two of recovering your money, you will be ready for your next car.
- Diesel car parts are costlier, like air filter, oil filter etc.
- Diesel engines are heavy, so the car suspension/shockers get bad earlier for diesel cars.
- Diesel car engies get noiser after 2-3 years of operation. Just listen to the noise of a new diesel engine car and the same model which has clocked around 50,000k.

These are my personal views and they may not be in line with other people views.

Dear Tarinderjit Singh,

If your monthly usage is around 1000kms than I would suggest you to go for diesel model. It would be more appropriate for me to answer if you provide more details like fuel efficiency, safety and performance and also price range. I can suggest a few cars. In diesel you can go for Maruti Swift and Ford Figo. Both these cars are better in performance when the question comes of diesel cars. As this is your first car you might face some problems in diesel cars. For this solution you can opt for petrol models like Hyundai i10 and Etios Liva. I hope that answers your query.

Thanks.
