Diesel Is Now Mainly an SUV Fuel in India

Diesel may not be as common in India’s car market as it once was, but it’s still around. Over time, diesel engines have mostly disappeared from cars like hatchbacks and sedans. On the other hand, diesel plays an important role in fuelling SUVs  There was a time when diesel was a go-to choice for Indian car buyers. It gave fuel efficiency, had strong pulling power and kept running costs low. Because of this, diesel versions were popular across car types. Now though, people can choose from petrol, CNG, and electric vehicles. That has made diesel less needed for cars.

Diesel Is Moving Away From Cars

The drop in diesel use is most noticeable in hatchbacks and sedans. Cars that used to come with diesel engines, like some from Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, have slowly switched to petrol, CNG or other engine types. One big reason is the rising cost and complexity of meeting pollution rules. New diesel engines need pollution-control systems, and that makes the car more expensive. For cars, carmakers may not think it’s worth the extra cost. So what’s left of diesel is mostly found in SUVs and bigger vehicles.

Why SUVs Still Need Diesel

SUVs have kept diesel alive in India. These vehicles are usually heavier. Are often used for long highway trips, family vacations or carrying lots of luggage. Diesel engines give torque even at low speeds. That helps when you’re driving a vehicle with people and bags. This also makes diesel a good fit for people who drive often on highways. Many SUVs. From brands like Mahindra, Tata, Kia and Toyota. Still offer diesel engines. For these vehicles, diesel remains a choice for buyers who care about long-distance driving and strong performance.

Diesel Still Has a Significant Market

Data from FADA for July 2026 shows that diesel passenger vehicles made up 17.73% of the market, up from 16.32% in June. In July 2025, diesel’s share was 17.97%. So the recent rise might not mean a comeback. Petrol and ethanol vehicles are still the largest group, with 41.68% of the market. CNG vehicles came next at 24.67%. Hybrids and electric vehicles held 8.02% and 7.90% respectively.

What Lies Ahead for Diesel?

Diesel probably won’t come back to its level across India’s car market. SUVs might keep giving it a steady group of buyers. As India’s car market grows and engine choices expand, diesel is turning into a special option, not a standard one. Its future will depend mostly on how people still want SUVs, long highway trips and vehicles that need strong torque.
Diesel may not be everywhere anymore. In India’s SUV market, it still has a place.
