E20 Petrol: Transforming India’s Automotive Future
With the increasing concern on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy throughout the world, the government of India is also initiating efforts to introduce alternative fuels that are both sustainable and eco-friendly. One such solution is E20 fuel – a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline. To popularise its use in the country, the Government of India has set an ambitious goal to roll out E20 fuel nationwide by 2025. Interestingly, manufacturers have already modified their engines to comply with BS6-II norms introduced in April 2023.

What is E20 Fuel?
E20 is an automotive fuel that contains a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Ethanol is a biofuel produced from plant-based resources like corn, sugarcane, wheat, barley, or even agricultural residues. As a renewable energy source, ethanol helps in reducing the need to depend on fossil fuels and contributes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
How Ethanol is Produced
Ethanol is produced through a fermentation process in which plant sugars or starches are converted into alcohol using microorganisms such as yeast. After fermentation, the mixture is distilled and dehydrated to separate ethanol from water and increase its concentration.
It would be interesting to know that India is the fourth-largest producer of ethanol in the world. The major states producing ethanol in India are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka. However, domestic consumption has already surpassed production, which has led to a push for increased manufacturing capacity.
Engine Compatibility with E20
Since ethanol and gasoline have different chemical properties, auto manufacturers have had to upgrade their vehicles to make them E20-compatible. The changes include:
• Material compatibility: Fuel tanks, pipes, seals, and gaskets are upgraded to resist ethanol’s corrosive properties.
• Fuel system modifications: Pumps and injectors are tuned to deliver the correct air-fuel mixture.
• Engine recalibration: The engine control unit (ECU) is adjusted to optimise ignition timing and combustion.
• Durability testing: Components are tested to ensure they can withstand ethanol’s long-term effects.
