Frankfurt Auto Show 2011 – the Mecca of car enthusiasts

The much awaited and one of the most talked about, the Frankfurt auto show got underway on Tuesday with launch and display of the large number of most awaited cars of the world. The Frankfurt motor show has been praised as Mecca of car enthusiast, considering the mega size and variety of this event. The 64th IAA International Motor Show started with a bang at the heart of one of the oldest and largest auto hubs of the world – Germany.

This time around, more than one thousand exhibitors from across 35 countries of the world are taking part in this mega event, where more than 80 premiers will be taking place during the two weeks of this show. The show bears a great importance for the countries like India where a number of international car makers looking forward to expand their portfolio. Many of the cars that are being displayed at this show will be launched in the Indian market, later on.

The top international car makers around the world are trying their best to woo visitors towards their platforms. Many of them have adopted innovative and fascinating concepts while building the platforms at this show, in a bid to make an impact among the visiting car enthusiasts and buyers. Here is a short description of the car crazy environment of this show along with the details of the top car displays and launches.

The British subsidiaries of the Tata Motors, Jaguar & Land Rover, have also come-up with something absolutely new and futuristic for the visitors at the Show. Luxury car maker Jaguar is showcasing the much talked about CX-16 concept. The CX-16 is basically a two-seater sports car that is loaded with a power-packed CX-16 concept (coupled with an electric motor). The car is claimed to be one of the most advanced hybrid sports car in the world. The car has been designed by the designer of iconic Aston Martin – Mr. Ian Callum.

The CX-16 carries an exciting technological feature which is very unique of its kind. There is a button on the steering wheel, which is when pressed, gives a torque boost of 10 seconds to the car, resulting in a burst of acceleration.

On the Other hand, Land Rover is displaying DC100 and DC100 Sports concepts of its iconic Sports utility vehicle (SUV) Defender, which is a next generation version of this SUV. Moreover, the new JLR logo was unveiled at the show, carrying a more futuristic design. The logo of Jaguar has also been changed subtly.

Adding new charm to the Show, the largest European car maker Volkswagen displaying its UP! hatchback, which will be launched in the Indian market next year. The India bound Volkswagen Up model is expected to be shelved in the price segment of Rs 3 to 4 lakh, where it will be competing with the likes of Maruti Wagon R, Maruti A-Star, Hyundai I10 and Chevrolet Beat.

Skoda Auto, the fully owned subsidiary of Volkswagen, displayed the concept of its upcoming hatchback in India – Mission L – at the show. The Skoda Mission L is expected to take place of the Octavia model in the country with a possible name Skoda Lauretta. The Mission L / Lauretta sedan will be shelved in the mid-size sedan segment where it will be fighting for space with the likes of Toyota Etios, Honda City, Volkswagen Vento, Hyundai Verna and Ford Fiesta.

The German luxury car giant Audi surprised many by setting-up a space-age platform at this edition of Frankfurt auto show, the firm is not only displaying a large number of its new and upcoming car models and concepts, it is actually offering an opportunity to the interested buyers to take a ride in the cars in the show itself. The car models that the firm has lined-up at the show include the likes of an updated edition of RS5 model that is already available in the Indian market, RS version of Audi A3 (coming to India next year) and coupe Audi TT, the concept of Audi A2, a small hatchback, etc.

The German auto giant Mercedes Benz, which is the second largest luxury car maker in the Indian market, displayed much awaited B Class model at the show. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class is expected to hit the Indian roads next year and the car will also be displayed at the forthcoming Delhi Auto Expo in the month of January. The other models displayed by the company include a luxury SUV ML Class, A-Class concept, and a future S Class concept.

Joining the league of the leading German luxury car makers who exhibited their products at this show, Porsche is showcasing new generation 911 Carrera model, which is claimed to be bigger and better as compared to the existing version of the car. The other popular cars and concepts that are being displayed at this show include Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale, porcelain based version of Bugatti Veyron, Bentley Continental GTC, Hyundai i30, etc.
