How GST 2.0 Transformed The Indian Small Car Market
The introduction of GST 2.0 reforms in September 2025 brought a major transformation to India’s automobile industry. The revised tax structure significantly reduced taxes on small cars, making them more affordable for middle-class and first-time buyers. This resulted in a dynamic increase in the sales of not only all major carmakers, but also made entry-level hatchbacks and compact cars as the biggest beneficiaries of the reform.

Before GST 2.0, small petrol cars under four metres attracted nearly 29% tax, while small diesel cars faced taxes of up to 31%. Under the revised structure, these vehicles were shifted to an 18% GST slab without additional cess. This tax reduction lowered ex-showroom prices and encouraged more consumers to enter the car market. The impact of the revised tax policy became visible almost immediately. Several leading car manufacturers reported a sharp rise in domestic sales after September 2025. Companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor all recorded strong growth in passenger vehicle sales during the months following the tax revision.
Small cars and hatchbacks particularly benefited from the new structure. Affordable models became cheaper by as much as Rs 1 lakh, making them attractive to budget-conscious buyers. Popular hatchbacks and compact cars saw higher demand as consumers looked for economical personal transportation options. Among all manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki emerged as one of the biggest gainers due to its strong presence in the small car segment. The company recorded significant growth in its mini and compact car categories during late 2025 and early 2026. Industry data also showed that first-time buyers and customers upgrading from two-wheelers played an important role in this revival.
The benefits of GST 2.0 were not limited to short-term festive demand. Sales figures from 2026 continued to show positive growth across the passenger vehicle market, indicating sustained consumer confidence. Analysts believe the lower tax burden improved affordability and helped revive demand in a segment that had been struggling for several years.
Overall, GST 2.0 has reshaped India’s car market by making small cars more accessible and boosting sales across the automotive sector. The reform has strengthened the position of affordable vehicles in the market and encouraged more consumers to consider car ownership.
