What to Do If You Forget to Deactivate FASTag After Car Sale

What to Do If You Forget to Deactivate FASTag After Car Sale

Selling an old car involves more than handing over the keys, registration documents and insurance papers to the new owner. One important step that many vehicle owners overlook is deactivating FASTag. If the FASTag remains active after the car is sold, the previous owner could continue paying toll charges for journeys made by the new owner. FASTag is linked to a bank account, prepaid wallet or another payment method. When the vehicle passes through a FASTag-enabled toll plaza, the applicable toll amount is automatically deducted from the linked account. Therefore, if you sell your car but leave the FASTag active, toll payments could continue to be charged to your account.

Why Can an Active FASTag Become a Problem?

The biggest concern is unwanted toll deductions. The new owner can drive the vehicle through different toll plazas while the charges continue to be deducted from the previous owner's linked account. In some cases, the seller may only realise the problem after receiving a toll deduction notification. There can also be complications if the vehicle becomes involved in a toll-related dispute or another issue. Since the FASTag is still associated with the previous owner's details, it may create unnecessary confusion and require the former owner to clarify that the vehicle has already been sold.

The New Owner May Also Face Problems

Leaving the old FASTag active can create difficulties for the buyer as well. According to the information highlighted in the report, only one active FASTag can be associated with a vehicle's registration and chassis details at a time. As a result, the new owner may face difficulties obtaining a new FASTag until the previous one is closed or deactivated. This can lead to unnecessary delays and repeated communication between the buyer and seller after the sale has already been completed.

How to Deactivate FASTag After Selling a Car

Once the vehicle sale is completed, contact the FASTag issuer or the bank that issued the tag and request account closure or deactivation. Follow the issuer's process and provide any required details or documents. It is also advisable to physically remove the FASTag sticker from the vehicle's windscreen and destroy it so that it cannot continue to be used.
If your FASTag account contains a refundable security deposit, the applicable amount may be returned to the linked bank account after the account is closed, subject to the issuer's terms.

Selling a car should therefore include more than transferring ownership documents. Deactivating FASTag is an important final step that can help prevent unwanted toll deductions and avoid unnecessary complications for both the seller and the new owner.
