Mahindra Scorpio Rivals

There is no smooth or obstacle-free way for any vehicle in the automotive market. The age old war horse from Mahindra, Scorpio got a substantial jolt when the Renault Duster was launched recently in India. Although it won’t match up with sheer off-roading capabilities of Mahindra Scorpio but will definitely attract a decent fleet of SUV lovers and try to eat away Scorpio’s share in any possible way. Comparing the looks of the two one seems an all rounder, ready to take on anything, other drops in as urban specialist. The interiors are comfortable and worked well with the Renault Duster while Scorpio has focused a bit less on the coziness and more on the performance.

The daunting SUV Mahindra Scorpio that took birth in 2002 and recently completed a decade in proudly serving the utility aficionados of the country. This Mahindra SUV was launched with a mission in mind and that was to weaken market share of champion Tata SUV of that time; the Tata Safari. Since then both these star studded SUVs has been fighting their way out. Both the cars perform better on any sort of roads and look extremely imposing, but when it comes to urbane SUV it can't be other than Mahindra Scorpio. Here both Safari and Scorpio have got upgrades in the engine department from time to time, but Scorpio has also received many catchy cosmetic changes too inside out against pretty less with Safari, and that constant amend has paved way towards success for the Mahindra beast in the country.  The perfect example of it is the launch of hassle-free Mahindra Scorpio AT (Automatic Transmission) and just before this it was the introduction of an affordable entry level version of it. With these initiatives, Mahindra Scorpio has not only created a rapport among the private owners, but also the cabbies and fleet operators across the nation.

Mahindra Scorpio Road Test Report

Mahindra Scorpio’s mHawk 2.2 litre diesel mill replaced the earlier 2.6 litre CRDe powertrain. The new 2.2 litre motor is conceived on the AVL platform and is made completely of aluminium alloy that helps in reducing weight of the engine. The powerplant also has a variable geometry turbocharger mated to a common rail direct injection system that enhances improved fuel efficiency, enables lower emission and generates reinforced torque along with higher power from lower displacement. The engine delivers a better performance at low revs, which portends well resulting in better fuel efficiency.

This is the first diesel micro hybrid that Mahindra has infused to the domestic car market. Scorpio SUV is equipped with a system that has been altered from the conventional ten seconds to two seconds prior to the motor stops, given the vehicle is in neutral and the clutch pedal is completely commissioned. It has resulted in 5 per cent improved fuel economy of the Mahindra Scorpio SUV as per the company. When the mill is caged, the A/C compressor is closed however; the blower still works along with the audio system. The audio system shuts off when the engine is restarted.

The conventional gear lever of the Scorpio SUV has now been exchanged with the Mahindra Xylo’s lever that comes with a better grip. Throws are long even now and it circumvents seldom while the engine is at high revs. Presence of four wheel drive and low ratio renders Scorpio a rugged feel and it can easily be used on erratic surface. However, it still cannot be driven on the typical off-road course. The four wheel drive lends it a sturdy stance and can be used to drive under extreme conditions.

Mahindra Scorpio returns a fuel economy of 9/10 kmpl which is decent enough for a humongous vehicle like Scorpio offered in four wheel drive. Scorpio is more proficient in off-road driving as it manages to drive through any erratic conditions. Scorpio now comes with an ABS that gives it a huge bump in performance even in uncompromising situations. The SUVs pedal comes with an exemplary bite and betterment. The SUV comes equipped with a Dueler H/T tubeless tyres, the size of these tyres is 235/70 R16. Overall, Scorpio is a powerful SUV which is good to run on India roads, the SUV has been selling in good numbers and continues to get ample sales every month.

Mahindra Scorpio Conclusion

Mahindra’s utility vehicles, especially Mahindra Scorpio will now face a stiff opposition of urban compact SUVs like recently launched Renault Duster, while approaching in future are Ford EcoSport and Maruti XA Alpha. No doubt these vehicles will not be pitted against the on road and off road capabilities of Scorpio, but due to price tag reading well under Rs 10 Lakh, it causes concern for the SUV maker. It won’t be a head-to-head contest but these trendy looking crossovers will attract urbane buyers and eat away a sizable share of Mahindra Scorpio, the hefty bookings of Duster is an alarming example. Though the company will try to compensate it with upcoming compact SUV/MPV Mahindra Quanto aka Mahindra Xylo Mini.

About Mahindra’s flagship model Mahindra Scorpio which has been ruling the Utility Vehicle (UV) segment since nearly a decade now, and is one of the favorites of SUV enthusiasts. It’s a sort vehicle that accepts every challenge that you throw at it, be it bumpy city roads or smooth highways. It is also the most excellent choice in this price segment. The build quality compared to competitors is at its best, but the Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) levels could have been better, here Mahindra needs to pay attention in the upcoming upgrade. Because of its towering sales figures it has got a fantastic resale value too. While the widespread service network Mahindra is always there to welcome you at any point of time. The Mahindra Scorpio features are perfectly fine along with powerful and efficient mHawk engine at work.
