Maruti Ertiga Pictures

The largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has debuted in the Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) segment with launch of its anticipated vehicle Maruti Ertiga. The vehicle has taken the nation by a flutter as it recorded around 15,000 bookings in mere 10 days of its launch.

The particular reason for its amazing sales number at the time of launch has been Maruti Ertiga’s lucrative pricing that starts with Rs 5.89 Lakh for base petrol version and climbs up to Rs 8.45 Lakh for top most diesel version. This MPV model is first ever presentation from Maruti camp, a segment where it was absent so far.

Maruti Ertiga PictureWith its economical pricing and above par features it will be competing with likes of Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo and Chevrolet Tavera in India. The company has marketed Maruti Ertiga as ‘LUV’ (and not MUV) which denotes ‘Life Utility Vehicle’ which is another marketing tactics from Maruti Suzuki that had actually assisted it to get closer to the Indian consumer prior to its launch.

The exteriors of Maruti Ertiga looks compact, but the insides are truly spacious. However, dimensions of this MPV are a bit smaller compared to Innova. The exterior styling says much about the hard work Maruti design engineers. From the front fascia Maruti Ertiga bestows a mixed look of Maruti Swift and Maruti Ritz, especially the stretched back headlamps and bonnet along with turn indicator mounted ORVMs. The aesthetics at the sides are commendable and give out appearance of a modish hatch, although it is stretched around 300mm more compared to Maruti Swift. While the back of Maruti MPV is done well with cornering tail lamps and rear windscreen comes with defogger and rear washer plus wiper along with fog lamps.

Maruti Ertiga PictureThe cabin has a convenient layout of 2+3+2 seats that makes a comfortable ride for all the seven occupants in the car. The Maruti Ertiga interiors are done in beige alongside ‘waterfall design’ centre console and some excellent fit & finish levels. The exciting elements include steering mounted audio controls, power steering, modern 2-din music system that supports CD player, AUX and USB along with numerous convenient aspects. The safety aspect is well taken care in the car with perfect protection features like airbags, ABS with EBD and much more. Maruti Ertiga comes in petrol and diesel versions. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.4L K – Series engine, at the same time diesel version is packed with 1.3L DDiS engine.

Maruti Ertiga Rivals

Maruti Ertiga PictureThe compact utility segment has taken a 'U' turn now with the launch of practical compact SUV Renault Duster in India. Up till now there was no rival for Maruti Ertiga but with the debut of Duster it needs to be aware. Since it is not only eating away the market of its senior SUVs, but also not letting entry level sedan segment to breathe at starting price of Rs 7.19 Lakh.

As of now, there is no direct competitor for this versatile MPV, as the segment is filled with large sized vehicles. But still Ertiga has all the guts to eat away the market share of Toyota Innova, as so far if a buyer has to think about MPV, it was bound to be Toyota Innova.

Here, the role play of both these vehicles can be different, for instance; if you are looking for an MPV with ‘commercial intention’ in mind then there is no better choice than Innova, but if family is you first preference, Maruti Ertiga will serve the purpose very well.  Also, the pricing factor is crucial piece here, as Innova starts with (more than Rs 9 Lakh much above compared to Maruti Ertiga’s inexpensive price-tag for the top end model (Rs 8.45 Lakh), which is bundled with some amazing features. Albeit, the difference between entry-level models of the two is in excess of Rs 3 Lakh. Nevertheless, one will never find it bulkier, compared to segment leader due to its fantastic front and rear that resembles a compact hatchback. And with Renault Duster walking in the middle it will certainly create a kind of dilemma in the minds of the car buyers.

Maruti Ertiga Engine, Power and Performance

Though both of these engines were also seen doing duties earlier in various models, but this time they are tweaked and retuned to get more out of them, as now they need to bear more burden due to its stretched platform and provide its consumers with some fitting performance figures.

The petrol-run 1.4L power train is K14B; the advanced K-series motor with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) that weights light resulting in higher mileage figures. The power train with 1372cc displacement delivers a peak power of 95 PS at 6000 rpm along with a peak torque of 130 Nm at the rate of 4000 rpm.

Moreover Maruti Ertiga petrol model is also capable of attaining a top speed of 164 kmph. On the other front, there is 1.3L, 1248cc DDiS diesel powertrain that smokes a topmost power of 90 PS alongside 200 Nm of meaty torque. This satisfactory output ensures a reasonable pick up of Maruti Ertiga diesel with 0-100 kph in just 15 seconds, which is by no means lesser considering that it is a large family carrier and not sporty hatch. Additionally, Maruti Ertiga top speed is of 160 kmph which is something that puts many of its compact rivals to shame.

The designing of the Maruti Ertiga carries a perfect amalgamation of new Swift and Ritz. Though Maruti Ertiga is a compact MPV, but from the rear portion it looks like a hatchback car, remember ‘Hyundai Getz’ that had Sania Mirza as brand ambassador for it. The tail lamps are bigger compared to Getz hatchback with a clear turn indicator that is cornering for extra safety from the vehicle approaching from sideways. There is rear wiper and washer system with defogger along with sportier looking roof spoiler, moreover there are R15 alloy wheels to bestow it a magnetizing emergence on the road. Maruti Ertiga Road Test Report

The hot selling compact MPV, Maruti Ertiga, has been in news since it was first unveiled in concept form, while after its official launch it makes waves for being an utmost value for money (a large) vehicle. Let’s get this inaugural Maruti MPV on road for some serious business. Maruti Ertiga is at hand with two conventional fuel choices namely, the acclaimed 1.4L K12 series VVT petrol power-train together with reliable 1.3L Multi-jet DDiS diesel engine. Here, diesel motor might seem an obvious option, but performance of revved up petrol is also not easy to overlook.

Maruti Ertiga has got monocoque construction that ensures car-like comfort and drivability, be it in city or on the highways. The MPV drives light heartedly, no hustles like other MUVs in the segment, all credits to greater use of lightweight high-tensile steel in the making. Another interesting fact for this vehicle is that, while driving you won’t fell as if you are pulling an MPV; but a hatch, as it weighs only 170kg (approx.) more than cutie-pie Maruti Swift.

Maruti Ertiga front view picture

Maruti Ertiga’s 1.4L petrol engine is quite refined and notable with a quiet idle state. Moreover, the apt spreading of power makes it best for city and open road purpose along with decent drivability. But on the longer routes, at times the build-up of power is too slow, at this point, when you try-out your ‘smart’ skills and rev it harder to get going, the engine turns a bit noisy, asking you to be patient.

On the other hand is the Maruti Ertiga’s advanced 1.3L (Fiat-sourced) diesel power-train and it’s the same motor that performs its hardships on Maruti SX4 and is suitable here too. Overall it’s good, but when highway cruising comes into frame it reveals a critical turbo lag. This shortcoming was earlier noted on Fiat Linea sedan also, which is one of the first models to hold this engine. This could play a perfect spoil sport, with lack of power, if it arises in city’s stop-n-go conditions with full-house inside. However, the 5-speed butter smooth shifting of gears linked to a light clutch tries to control the situation.

The noise levels inside Maruti Ertiga is not that good, but it is not louder either, one can say that it is not as calm as a mid-sized sedan. The company has worked at it better by putting in sound-deadening material nearby the engine. The vibration levels at gear knob and inside are pretty much under control as there are hydraulic engine mounts. Due to larger wheel base and better suspension system sharp speed breakers and bumpy rides are well absorbed with effortlessness.  The turns (turning radius 5.2 meters) are taken with confidence, all credits to well contained body rolls, whereas the standard handling is much knowable in Maruti Ertiga.

The comfortable and responsive tilt steering is suitably light as required at city speeds whereas, elevated stance of driving makes outside visibility pretty clear. One of the distinct parts of Maruti Ertiga has been its exceptional city and highway maneuverability.

Maruti Ertiga Conclusion

Maruti Suzuki has got another champion under its reputed banner in the form of Maruti Ertiga. This car provides you with compactness of hatch along with space of a utility vehicle. There are absolutely no reasons, why Indian car buyer will not go for this stretched hatchback cum mini MPV. Previously, as per the reports and test drives by industry experts it was all a hit in itself, but the only concern was lying in the pricing factor that could make or break for Maruti. But with an introductory price that starts under INR 6 Lakh, there are all grounds to cheer.

The exterior part has smartness imbibed, as it portrays a hatchback from front and rear, which cleverly hides the length of the car. With Maruti Ertiga, this time Maruti has done a sort of ‘Renault Grand Modus’, which is a famous mini-MPV sold around European market and some US markets by French carmaker Renault. It has now opened up an all-new segment, which will never be threatened by Toyota Innova or Mahindra Xylo, instead it will eat away their market share with immense ease. Till now, there is no head-to-head competition for Ertiga, but things wil not same after the debut of Ford B-Max MPV, by end of this year.
