Amid growing concerns over E20 petrol, a recent nationwide survey has revealed that 45% of petrol vehicle owners would approach a consumer court if they believed the ethanol-blended fuel had caused damage to their vehicles. The survey was conducted by LocalCircles following a landmark consumer court ruling in Raipur related to E20 fuel compatibility.

 

 

The survey highlights increasing concerns among motorists as India continues its move towards E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol. Although the fuel is promoted as an environmentally friendly alternative that reduces dependence on the import of crude oil and reduces carbon emissions, many vehicle owners remain uncertain about its long-term impact on older vehicles.

 

The findings come shortly after the Raipur District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed Maruti Suzuki to replace a customer's Grand Vitara with a new E20-compatible vehicle or refund the purchase price. The customer had alleged that the SUV suffered repeated engine issues after using E20 petrol. The automaker has stated that it will challenge the ruling, maintaining that the vehicle was designed to operate on E20 fuel.

 

According to the survey, a significant number of respondents also expressed concern over the lack of awareness regarding whether their vehicles are fully compatible with E20 fuel. Many participants felt that manufacturers and fuel retailers should provide clearer information on compatibility and possible risks before expanding E20 availability nationwide.

 

The debate over E20 petrol has intensified in recent weeks, with supporters pointing to environmental and economic benefits, while critics argue that consumers should not bear the cost of any potential compatibility issues. Industry experts and government agencies continue to maintain that vehicles certified for E20 can safely use the fuel, although legal scrutiny and consumer concerns are likely to keep the issue in the spotlight.
