FASTags To Be Necessary Even For Old Four Wheelers

In its new notification the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has said that from January 1, 2021, the use of FASTags will be compulsory for all the vehicles. It would be interesting to know that to promote the digital and IT-based payment the government of India has initiated the use of FASTags necessary for all types of four-wheelers, including the old vehicles which were sold before December 1, 2017. The decision regarding the use of FASTags was made compulsory according to the Central Motors Vehicle Rules, 1989, for the four-wheelers registered after December 1, 2017. Interestingly, the same rule is also applicable to the original manufacturers and the dealers of their four-wheelers.

In its new notification issued on Saturday, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said, "It had further been mandated that the renewal of fitness certificate will be done only after the fitment of FASTag for the transport vehicles. Further that for national permit vehicles the fitment of FASTag has been mandated since October 1, 2019."

The FASTag is a prepaid tag that is used for making an automatic payment at the toll-plazas that are operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). The radio-frequency identification (RFID) based prepaid tag is fixed on the windscreen of the four-wheeler for the payment of the toll tax directly from prepaid or bank savings account linked with it. According to the sources of MoRTH, the use of FASTag will be also mandatory while getting the new third party insurance via an amendment in FORM 51, in which details of the FASTag ID will be recorded. This new rule will come in effect from April 1, 2021.

The notification issued by the MoRTH further states that " the renewal of fitness certificate will be done only after the fitment of FASTag for the transport vehicles. Further that for national permit vehicles the fitment of FASTag has been mandated since October 1, 2019."

The new notification taken by the central government will make sure that the payment of toll at all the plazas is made digitally through electronic, thus making the seamless flow of traffic from the toll plazas. It not only reduces the time of waiting for the vehicles but also saves fuel consumed by them in crawling to make the payment.
