The government of India is preparing a draft proposal to increase the mixture of petrol from the existing E20 to E25, as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and to combat the situation of fluctuation in global fuel prices. The move comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia that have triggered concerns over global energy supply disruptions.

 

 

According to reports, government officials are considering the implementation of the higher ethanol blend petrol in the country after assessing its impact on the performance of vehicles and compatibility with the engine. It would be interesting to know whether India’s strategy to increase the use of ethanol-blended petrol has already reduced crude oil imports and lowered foreign exchange expenditure.

 

The country has already achieved a milestone of introducing E20 petrol in the country before the expected time. Encouraged by this achievement, the government is now looking into the possibilities of expanding blending levels further to strengthen energy security and reduce vulnerability to sudden spikes in global oil prices.

 

Industry experts, however, have raised concerns regarding the impact of higher ethanol content on existing engines. It is believed that the use of ethanol-blended fuel may affect mileage, increase engine wear in older vehicles, and require modifications for long-term use. Automobile manufacturers have already requested the government to conduct extensive testing before introducing E25 fuel across the country.

 

The government is continuously expanding refinery infrastructure and strengthening strategic petroleum reserves to improve energy resilience. Projects such as the Barmer Refinery and refinery expansions in Gujarat and Numaligarh are part of India’s broader effort to secure fuel supply amid global uncertainty. According to industry experts, the shift toward higher ethanol blending aligns with India’s long-term objective of promoting renewable energy, reducing emissions, and decreasing reliance on imported fossil fuels. However, policymakers are expected to proceed cautiously to balance environmental benefits with vehicle performance and consumer concerns.
