Maruti Suzuki Deploys BESS At Kharkhoda Plant
Retaining its commitment to sustainable manufacturing, the country’s leading car manufacturing company, Maruti Suzuki, has deployed a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its recently inaugurated Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana. The initiative is aimed at improving the utilisation of renewable energy while reducing the plant’s overall carbon footprint.

The newly installed battery storage system has been integrated into the plant’s internal electricity distribution network as a pilot project. It will store excess electricity generated by the facility’s solar power installation during periods of low demand, such as holidays and non-operational hours. The stored energy can then be used whenever electricity demand increases, ensuring better energy efficiency and minimising wastage.
Maruti Suzuki had previously installed a 20 MWp solar power plant at the Kharkhoda facility in 2025. While the solar installation generated clean electricity, a portion of the power remained unused when the factory was not operating. The addition of the Battery Energy Storage System addresses this challenge by storing surplus renewable energy for future use instead of allowing it to go unused.
Besides improving the utilisation of renewable energy, the BESS is expected to enhance the stability of the plant’s electricity network by providing a reliable backup during fluctuations in power demand. According to the company, the system has an estimated operational life of around 15 years and is expected to help reduce nearly 54 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Commenting on the development, Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the company remains committed to supporting India’s vision of building a self-reliant and sustainable energy ecosystem. He noted that adopting advanced energy storage solutions is another step towards increasing the use of renewable energy in the company’s manufacturing operations while improving environmental performance. The commissioning of the Battery Energy Storage System comes shortly after the inauguration of Maruti Suzuki’s state-of-the-art Kharkhoda manufacturing facility, which is expected to play a significant role in expanding the company’s production capacity. The latest initiative reflects the automaker’s broader strategy of combining manufacturing growth with environmentally responsible practices.
