Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has once again strongly backed ethanol and flex-fuel vehicles, stating that he would like India to move away from petrol due to its environmental and economic impact. Speaking at the launch of Hero MotoCorp's flex-fuel versions of the Splendor and HF Deluxe motorcycles, Gadkari said that petrol contributes to pollution and increases the country's dependence on imported crude oil. The minister emphasized that India spends a substantial amount on fuel imports every year and that alternative fuels such as ethanol can help reduce this burden. He also suggested that older vehicles could be converted to run on ethanol with suitable modification kits, while the government continues expanding ethanol fuel infrastructure across the country.

 

 

However, Gadkari's strong advocacy of ethanol has also attracted criticism. Opponents have questioned whether there is a conflict of interest because his sons are associated with ethanol-related businesses through Cian Agro. Critics argue that as a senior minister promoting ethanol-based mobility, his family's involvement in the sector raises concerns about impartiality. Responding to such allegations in the past, Gadkari has dismissed them, stating that his son's company accounts for less than one percent of India's ethanol production and that accusations are being amplified by vested interests affected by the country's ethanol-blending programme.

 

Apart from the conflict-of-interest debate, vehicle owners and automotive enthusiasts have also expressed concerns over ethanol-blended fuels. Many argue that higher ethanol content can reduce fuel efficiency and may affect older vehicles that were not originally designed for such blends. Environmental groups have additionally raised concerns regarding water consumption associated with ethanol production. Despite the criticism, the government continues to expand its ethanol programme. After successfully achieving its E20 blending target ahead of schedule, attention is now shifting toward higher ethanol blends and flex-fuel vehicles. Several manufacturers, including Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki, have already introduced flex-fuel-ready products, while thousands of fuel stations are expected to offer higher ethanol blends in the coming years.

 

As India accelerates its transition towards alternative fuels, the debate surrounding ethanol's benefits, vehicle compatibility, environmental impact, and potential conflicts of interest is likely to remain in focus.
