SUVs Take Lead as Utility Vehicles Dominate India’s Car Market

India’s passenger vehicle market is witnessing a major shift in consumer preferences, with SUVs and other utility vehicles emerging as the preferred choice among car buyers. According to recent sales trends, utility vehicles now account for around 67% of India’s passenger vehicle market, highlighting the growing popularity of SUVs and MPVs. For years, hatchbacks such as the Maruti Suzuki Alto, Swift and WagonR were among the most popular choices for Indian buyers because of their affordable prices, easy handling and fuel efficiency. However, changing customer expectations and the increasing availability of feature-rich SUVs have significantly altered the market landscape.

Utility Vehicle Sales See Strong Growth

The growing demand for SUVs is clearly visible in the sales performance of major carmakers. Maruti Suzuki has recorded strong growth in its utility vehicle portfolio, which includes models such as the Brezza, Fronx, Ertiga and Grand Vitara. The company's utility vehicle sales increased by 46.2%, while production was also increased substantially to meet rising demand. Mahindra has also benefited from the SUV boom. Its popular models, including the Thar, Scorpio-N and XUV range, have helped the automaker achieve around 42% growth in sales.

Higher Ground Clearance Is a Major Attraction

One of the key reasons behind the popularity of SUVs is their practicality on Indian roads. Many cities, towns and rural areas continue to experience potholes, uneven roads and waterlogging during the monsoon. The higher ground clearance offered by SUVs allows them to deal with such road conditions more comfortably than many conventional hatchbacks. This has encouraged buyers to consider compact and small SUVs even when their original budget was aimed at purchasing a hatchback.

Buyers Want More Safety and Features

Indian car buyers are no longer choosing vehicles based solely on price and mileage. Safety, road presence, technology and comfort have become increasingly important factors. SUVs provide a higher seating position and a commanding view of the road, which many customers find reassuring. Automakers are also equipping newer models with features such as six airbags, 360-degree cameras and advanced driver assistance systems, making them more attractive to safety-conscious buyers.

Financing Is Supporting the Shift

Easier vehicle financing has also helped change purchasing decisions. Competitive interest rates, flexible loan options and EMI-based financing have made it easier for customers to stretch their budgets. Instead of buying a basic hatchback in the Rs 5–6 lakh range, some buyers are now willing to increase their budget and opt for feature-packed compact SUVs priced around Rs 8–12 lakh. This shift is further strengthening the position of utility vehicles in India's passenger vehicle market.

The growing dominance of SUVs indicates that the Indian car market has entered a new phase. While hatchbacks continue to have their place, utility vehicles are increasingly becoming the mainstream choice for buyers seeking practicality, safety, features and a stronger road presence.
