Suzuki Unveils eSky EV in Japan With 310 Km Range
Suzuki has unveiled its new eSKY electric car in Japan, introducing a compact EV designed primarily for urban mobility. With a claimed driving range of up to 310 km on a single charge, the new electric car could become an interesting option in the affordable EV segment if Suzuki eventually brings it to India.
Compact Electric Car for City Driving
The Suzuki eSKY follows a compact, tall-boy design aimed at making city driving easier. Measuring around 3.4 metres in length, the EV sits between the tiny MG Comet EV and conventional compact hatchbacks in terms of size. Its design is focused more on practicality and manoeuvrability than outright performance. The model is based on Suzuki's new K-EV platform and has been developed for the Japanese kei-car segment. The production version follows the Vision e-Sky concept that Suzuki showcased earlier.
310 Km Claimed Range
One of the biggest highlights of the Suzuki eSKY is its claimed range of up to 310 km. The car is reported to use a battery pack of around 26 kWh, although Suzuki has not released all detailed powertrain specifications yet. Power output is expected to be in the region of 60-70 PS based on current reports. The longer claimed range could give the eSKY an advantage over smaller city EVs. For comparison, the MG Comet EV currently offers a claimed range of 230 km.
Features and Safety
Despite its compact dimensions, the eSKY is expected to offer a useful set of modern features. These include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital driver's display, digital climate controls, cruise control and heated seats. Safety and convenience features reportedly include an electronic parking brake, hill-hold control, ABS, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. The car is also reported to feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, which can allow the battery to power compatible external electrical devices.
Could the eSKY Come to India?
The Suzuki eSKY could be an interesting proposition for the Indian market, particularly as demand for compact and affordable electric cars continues to grow. If launched in India, it could potentially compete with models such as the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV. However, Suzuki has not officially confirmed an India launch for the eSKY. Reports suggest that Maruti Suzuki is working on an affordable electric hatchback for India, but it remains unclear whether that model will be directly related to the eSKY. For now, the Suzuki eSKY remains a Japan-focused compact EV, but its combination of small dimensions and a claimed 310 km range makes it a model worth watching for the Indian market.
