V2V Communication Proposed by Govt, Rollout in 2027
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has developed a proposal in the form of a draft for introducing Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication system in India. This would be done through a phased implementation starting from October 2027. It is expected that this will help increase road safety by making communication possible between vehicles and thereby informing drivers about dangers even before they get aware of it.
Phased Implementation Plan
As per the draft notification, the vehicles in the categories of L, M, and N that are produced from October 1, 2027, shall have to adhere to the AIS-230 standard in case these vehicles have already been fitted with a V2V communication system. Further, all vehicles that are produced from October 1, 2028, shall be factory fitted with V2V communication systems meeting the AIS-230 standards.
Working Mechanism of V2V Technology
Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication allows nearby vehicles to exchange crucial data about their speed, position, direction of movement, braking, etc. In addition, vehicles can send warning signals in case of unexpected brake application, possible collisions, hazardous lane changing, wrong-way driving and the presence of approaching emergency vehicles. In contrast with traditional safety systems, which depend only on the use of in-built cameras and sensors, V2V technology gives an extended area of view for drivers and safety systems, thus providing extra time to respond and possibly preventing accidents.
Standards-Based on AIS-230 Standards
The proposed solution is developed using the recently adopted AIS-230 standard, which establishes technical, functional, environmental and cybersecurity standards for V2V communication units. The system operates on C-V2X technology and uses the 5.875–5.925 GHz frequency range.
Consultation Process ongoing
MoRTH has solicited comments from industry participants and the general public through a 30-day consultation process prior to publishing the notification. It is hoped that the phased implementation will afford the vehicle manufacturers and component makers sufficient time to comply with the regulations. In case the proposal is passed, it will go a long way in ensuring road safety in India while at the same time providing a foundation for future transport systems.
